Joel N. Smith, MD

When you have a strong desire to help others coupled with an interest in science and human anatomy – the field of medicine is a perfect career fit! For Dr. Joel Smith, orthopedics was a natural fit to combine his interest in anatomy and passion for helping people achieve their functional goals.

Dr. Smith received his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Central Arkansas and continued on to earn his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, OK. Most recently he completed a sports medicine fellowship in Lake Tahoe, CA where he worked with the head physician for the U.S. Alpine Ski team and the athletes during training events. During his chief year in residency, he was awarded the Outstanding Specialty Resident of the Year by the Trauma Center.

Dr. Smith practices in all aspects of sports medicine and has a concentration in arthroscopic treatment of injuries to the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle. He also has an interest in joint replacement, specifically of the knee and shoulder including total knee arthroplasty, partial knee arthroplasty, total shoulder arthroplasty and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. He utilizes both surgical and non-surgical methods to treat patients and finds his greatest satisfaction when a patient is able to return to his or her desired activity level or reaches their functional goals.

Outside of practicing medicine, you will most certainly find Dr. Smith outdoors enjoying spare time with his wife and daughter. He is an avid golfer, runner and mountain biker and enjoys a variety of sports including baseball, basketball, and football. He and his family enjoy exploring all that central Arkansas has to offer.
